While doing my live radio shows, I sometimes look at the stats to see who’s listening where. Yesterday, halfway through the Classical Music Interlude, I noticed that there were listeners in Tehran. This put a lot of things into perspective. Listeners in a war zone. Listeners in an oppressive regime. Good people or bad people? I even said on air, and Tehran stayed online for well over an hour, that I hoped they were good people who were listening. I don’t know how I’d feel if I knew dictators were listening. I suppose that same thought would creep up if I saw that Washington was listening.

Music is a leveller. That’s probably why really good music, and new music, makes tyrants uncomfortable.
