Triptych

The left panel.

Asparagus. Scent of
Childhood. Sunday
Torture. Melted
Butter.

The central panel.

Untainted. Memory
Of joy. Love
Unbounded. Skin
On skin.

The final panel.

Pain. The body
Imperfect. Self
Tainted. Beyond
Repair.

Oil and colour and resin and frame.
We paint ourselves into
Fragile pictures.

Anointed by oil
It glowers from its
Central hanging across
The otherwise empty room.

It watches the viewers
With its unforgiving holiness,
Gold hinges and gilded frame.
It has no perspective.
Pre-Renaissance.
Flat.

A triptych of many colours.
A hypocrisy of saints.
Images of martyrdom
Commissioned by hell.
