Poetry

44/2023

I am accumulating more idiosyncracies
Than my origin should permit –
Bright colours against the grey of day,
The underside of a wren scaling the sky –
I am not an aristocratic fop, however much
I would sometimes have liked to be,
Nor a middle class overachiever who checks
His stocks and bonds over a cooked breakfast
And the FT. I am just the man lost in
The haste of a life that seems permanently static.

origin

the chemicals
their interactions
and reactions unseen
biological determinants
fluctuations
genetic guilt
unaswerable accusations
endless circuit
around the body
poison and pleasure
sustenance and fear
pictures
visions
dreams
recoil
imaginings
unwrittensounded-out scripts
this is where
depression
comes from
