A Father’s Love

The wise father resists the urge
To control even the wildest of daughters,
Prefers to allow mistakes, remain as
Sanctuary, help, at the most extreme
Moments, in the hope that she will
Occasionally lean her head on his
Shoulder to cry or smile or laugh
Or rest in a still minute. But
Even the wisest father doesn’t know
What to do when she draws away,
Controlled by person or circumstance
Or substance, and the pain makes
Him physically ill, drives a knife
Through his thoughts, his heart, his
Very breath. Wisdom itself has
Boundaries beyond which live
Fear and helplessness.
