After The End
After The End
The first day after the end,
She threw away everything that
Couldn’t be burned or eaten or
Drunk or used as a weapon or
To build something to move.
On the second day, she sorted
What was left, and put it neatly
Into the stackable boxes she still
Had from her life before the end,
And built a tower on wheels.
On the third day, she mowed her
Head and covered herself in as
Many layers as she could without
Losing mobility. That night she
Slept in the garage next to a fire.
On the fourth day, the cold came,
The radio channels went silent,
And the electricity failed. The fire
In the garage almost went out,
So she used her hair for kindling.
On the fifth day, she dared
Herself out onto the streets. She
Was the only living being she saw
Or heard. She didn’t have the
Courage to walk through the dark.
On the sixth day, she armed herself
With all the knives and scissors
She could carry, and pushed her tower
On wheels through the faded sun
Down to the shore of the dead sea.
On the seventh day, she didn’t wake.
