Context

Context

This history, memory
On memory, scales on
The reptile of time,
Layer on layer,
Builds into something
The present can’t deal
With alone, shrouded
In funeral colours,
The grief of old age,
And the sense of loss.

Fingers turn the old
Pictures, one after the other,
Into a faltered house
Of dog-eared cards,
And he wonders how
The deck might have
Fallen had the context
Been a different one;

Country, colour, voice,
Gender, height, parentage,
Language, DNA,
Joy, sound, meaning.
