Even Before 2016
Even before twenty sixteen, we were warning
Of the coming storm, how the wall wouldn’t
Hold if no-one said anything against the
Fascists already in power in certain places,
England being one of them (I even lost a friend
Over what I said austerity really was from
The Tories; genocide by any other name), but
Those placid believers in everything working
Out told us we were over-reacting, being
Deliberately obstructive, crying wolf over a
Cute little puppy, that concentration camps
And gas chambers would forever be a thing
Of the past, while they closed their eyes to
The obvious warning signs, and their ears
To our words. And so we have spent our lives
Writing politics rather than fictions, and
Yet I feel like we didn’t try hard enough
Now that the storm has broken, and we’re
All afraid of what’s happening and what’s to come.
