Millennia

The cave was almost too warm, now
They’d discovered how to make their own
Fire rather than dragging it down from
Lightning-struck trees, this summer, and
Invented a new word to describe their
Home-made flames. But they needed it
To keep away the wild beasts with the
Familiar faces who’d eaten some of their
Kind before. In time, though they couldn’t
Have known it, the millennia would stretch
Out, and they’d invent weapons with which
To devour and destroy their own kind.
