This Measure

How to measure a moment?
A sigh, a touch, a look,
The feeling of lasting,
A low mutter in mutual sleep,
The scent of old bed sheets,
A frozen slice of air
On a high cliff facing east
One mid-morning in February?

How to weigh a memory?
A feather, an ogre, a glance,
One of many small victories
In a fractured life, a hand
Held in secret behind a
Closed door, full of hope
It might be forever,
Closed eyes, waking up in
The caress of the full moon
One night in Crete in June?

Best not to measure these
Treasures at all, with all
Their different meanings.
