To Seek

To Seek

This fool’s errand,
To catch the sun’s fall
Beneath the horizon
At exactly the right time
From the city’s tallest
Hill above the cathedral,
And capture the beam of
The unknown comet in his
Eye and mind and lens
For a future seldom-visited
Memory.

This fool’s errand,
To seek to change the world
In a breath, to drive all
Evil off the edges of this
Erratic planet, and bring
Peace to all peoples,
Be they listening or not,
And in the darkness to
Bemoan the failure of
This hopeless mission.

This fool’s errand,
This dream of paradise,
This barren place,
This unforgiving land,
This unenlightened territory,
This fatal history,
This ragged tale,
That effort,
That loving,
That seeking.
