Or not. So he couldn’t, or
Wouldn’t, understand when
She called him her remora.

At first he thought it was a
Pledge of undying love,
Akin to a trophy, or an
Eternal betrothal, until
She asked for the key back
To the flat she’d let him
Move into with her
Five years ago.

The first thing he did when
He started to pack was to
Check his only paltry pristine
Dictionary, and realised he’d
Become her obstacle as much
As she’d become his.

In the end, he only took a
Bag full of clothes and that
Dictionary, to wander down
To the river where the squats
Were, and reinvent himself.
