Fable

I have written every day, but only today’s prompt seems appropriate.

Fable

It was there from the beginning,
Yet too few heeded the warnings,
That the monster was growing, that
It lied, and that the people had
Come to love it, although it would
Ultimately devour them, and spent
Time worshipping at its lair because
It fed their fears and prejudices
Against the peaceful unicorns they
Shared their village with. Every
Night, the people halved their
Hard-earned food with the sinister
Orange beast with scales of steel,
Grumbling in its cave that it was
Still hungry. The day they crowned it
Leader of their council, it killed the
Unicorns, and destroyed the village
And landscape around it.
Now it rampages across the world.
