Memory

Even the torrential rain can’t
Obliterate ths path through the
Fields at the edge of the city, nor
The thousands like it which criss
Cross the land that was here before
The people.
The soil of them is hard-baked
By the millions of footsteps which
Have found their direction her,
Have moved along them to their
Unknown destinations the other
Side of the horizon, and beneath
This hard crust, the ancient memory
Of this planet still breathes.
