Day 341

check mate

the pieces
the square
two-dimensional
in plane three
to touch and sight
scent and sense
monochrome puppets
asleep in a wooden box
without holes to breathe

would it do
to ascribe a life
to them beyond
the players’ touch
the doubling of the grain
on each square within the square
the weight of thoughts numbered

move this way
and that
by rules no-one
ever thinks
to change

alternate the non-colours
adjust the clocks
morph the shapes
usurp the words
abuse the vacuum
between spaces
all these straight
lines intersecting

by the rule of fractions
these atoms can never touch
