Ladder

You’re too old for me
To teach you any lessons
Any more.

I’m too old to believe
In any lessons
I might have been taught.

We are all born
At the foot of a well.
We all have to learn to build
A ladder from the wood
Of life.

Often, the parts don’t fit
When we try them at first,
And we have to rebuild
And rebuild
Until the puzzle completes.

Out in the fresh air and light
At the top we are alive.
I am still reaching for
The final rung.
